Utilizing CTAT Cognitive Tutor for Learning Fraction Multiplication and Division with Adaptive Feedback

Students tend to struggle in understanding fraction problems even after understanding the whole number concept. This research addresses this challenge by developing a web-based mathematic intelligent tutoring system utilizing Cognitive Tutor Authoring Tools to create a cognitive tutor with adaptive feedback for learning multiplication and division of fractions. The system combines visual model and adaptive feedback to guide students step-by-step in solving problems. In this article, we describe the tutor's functioning and architecture, consisting of an interface, tutor model, student model, and domain model. A preliminary study was conducted to evaluate the system's effectiveness in improving student performance and the role of feedback in the learning process. Preliminary results suggest the tutor can improve student performance with an average learning gain of 12.07% compared to students in the control group with an average learning gain of 4.60%. Feedback from tutors can help students in the learning process, as indicated by the positive response from the survey conducted by students.
