Integration of Advanced Process Control into Modular Plants Using the Module Type Package

Optimized and decentralized process control is crucial for energy systems incorporating renewable energy, as it enhances flexibility and reliability by dynamically managing variable energy inputs like solar and wind. This ensures optimal resource utilization and supports grid stability while minimizing environmental impact. However, the integration of external applications (e.g., for operational optimization) into existing process control systems for energy systems is cumbersome due to missing interfaces. This paper presents a novel approach to integrate Advanced Process Control applications into process control systems within modular production plants for energy systems using the Module Type Package standard. The proposed integration framework facilitates system integration and enhances scalability, particularly in complex and dynamic industrial environments. The framework reduces manual configuration efforts and improves the operational efficiency of modular plants by enabling standardized and reliable communication between Advanced Process Control systems and process control systems. The proposed framework is validated through a case study on modular electrolysis plants, demonstrating its effectiveness in real-world applications.
