Design Procedure of a Brushless Induction Excited Synchronous Generator

The Brushless Induction Excited Synchronous Generator (BINSYG) combines Synchronous and Induction Machines embedded in the same machine frame and wound for different numbers of poles to achieve magnetic decoupling. The machine is brushless and permanent magnet less. The Induction machine may be used in different modes to generate the required excitation current for the Synchronous Generator. In this work, the design procedure of the BINSYG (for both synchronous machine and induction machine) is explained, and a typical laboratory type, 5.5 kVA 415 V BINSYG is considered as an example. The designed machine is simulated in MAXWELL-2D, and the simulation results for no-load, isolated load, and grid-connected mode are shown.
