Comparative FFT Analysis of Ten-Step and SPWM Driven Five-Phase Voltage Source Inverters

The growing adoption of multiphase machines in high-power, variable-speed applications demands a detailed understanding of their operational dynamics. This study compares two Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) techniques—Ten-Step Inverter and Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (SPWM)—in Five-Phase Voltage Source Inverters (VSIs). Simulations conducted using MATLAB/SIMULINK evaluate the spectral quality of output and pole voltages through Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis. FFT analysis identifies harmonic distortions, providing insights into the strengths and limitations of each modulation technique. The results demonstrate how these techniques influence inverter performance and inform optimal selection for specific applications. The Ten-Step Inverter offers distinct benefits in certain scenarios, while SPWM excels in achieving improved spectral quality in others. This research highlights the importance of FFT analysis in choosing modulation strategies for multiphase systems. The findings contribute to advancing the efficiency and reliability of high-power VSIs in industrial settings.
