Microstructural and Anti-corrosion responses of copper in NaCl-fishbone ash environment

Copper and its alloys are highly esteemed for their advantageous attributes, encompassing robust corrosion resistance, excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, and remarkable mechanical workability and malleability. These traits find extensive utility across diverse sectors, from the manufacturing of wires, sheets, and pipelines in electronic and maritime industries, to power plants, heat exchangers, and cooling towers. Despite copper's inherent anti-corrosive nature, it remains susceptible to degradation within challenging environments. The presence of salt ions and airborne pollutants can significantly hasten copper's corrosion rate, leading to the accumulation of corrosion byproducts on its surface. The potential of utilizing animal bone particulates for corrosion mitigation has spurred research exploration into their application. Organic green inhibitors, sourced from materials such as fishbone ash and other animal ashes, have been thoroughly investigated for their efficacy in mitigating corrosion across a spectrum of metal surfaces. In this paper, our focus revolves around investigating the corrosive behaviour of copper within a corrosive medium containing 3 wt% NaCl, wherein fishbone serves as the inhibitive agent. Electrochemical analysis was conducted at temperatures 30, 40, 50 and 60°C, and an inhibitor concentration of 0.2g. microstructural analysis, Polarization analysis, open circuit potential measurement, and statistical optimization were meticulously explored to ascertain the effectiveness of fishbone ash as a corrosion inhibitor. The outcomes of the electrochemical analysis unveiled the inhibitor's behaviour as a mixed type of corrosion inhibitor.
