Design and Implementation of IoT-Based Generator Monitoring and Control System

This paper presents the design and implementation of an IoT-based generator monitoring and control system, which aims to address the challenge of unavailability of power supply or frequent interruptions, especially in remote and underdeveloped areas in various parts of the world. The system consists of a NodeMCU Arduino board, programmed in C++, which enables wireless communication with web applications via the internet. A temperature sensor was used to measure the temperature of the generator room. The temperature reading was utilized to build a safety mechanism that switches off the generator when the temperature exceeds 122℉ to prevent fire outbreaks and equipment damage. An ultrasonic sensor was used to measure the generator fuel level. The web application, which contained ON/OFF control buttons, ON/OFF control timers, the plot of the annual fuel usage, and real-time monitoring of the fuel volume in the generator tank, was used as the user interface to make operation easy and accessible from anywhere in the world. The system helped to optimize energy usage, reduce power downtime and economic losses due to power interruption and unavailability, and improve the overall efficiency of generator operations while reducing energy costs and environmental impact. The system responded at an average time of 1.31 seconds.
