Digital-Coding Reconfigurable Metasurface for THz Anomalous Reflections Based on Liquid Crystal

This paper proposes a 1-bit coding reconfigurable metasurface based on liquid crystal (LC) to achieve THz anomalous reflections. To this end, an LC-based unit-cell with 180° phase difference between the states is proposed to fulfill the requirement of 1-bit coding. THz anomalous reflections are achieved by applying different coding sequences for the LC permittivity. Under a normal plane wave illumination, the full-wave numerical results show a beam steering from 19.5° to 59°. This work may advance functional beam steering with reconfigurable metasurfaces towards the THz range for modern indoor communication as a signal repeater to relay information to surrounding devices.
