Performance Analysis of Supercapacitor Energy Saving Systems in EOT-Cranes: A Field Study

Electric Overhead Traveling (EOT) cranes are essential material handling systems in industries such as manufacturing, shipping, and construction, enabling efficient movement of heavy loads. EOT cranes exhibit significant power consumption during operation, particularly when lifting containers. This high energy demand can lead to increased pressure on local electrical grids, especially when multiple cranes operate simultaneously. This study evaluates the effectiveness of supercapacitor-based energy-saving systems in EOT cranes through field research. The supercapacitor bank is connected through a bidirectional DC-DC converter to the DC-link. This system is used to capture and reuse regenerative energy, reducing fuel consumption and emissions. This approach alleviates pressure on local electrical grids during peak operations and also achieves a notable energy consumption reduction of around 9.7%. Ultimately, this system proves to enhance operational efficiency while promoting environmental sustainability.
