Environmental Impact of Smart Bins: A Case Study Analysis of CO2 Emission Reduction in Major Cities

This paper explores the implications of intelligent litter bins that are integrated with IoT with a particular focus on efficiency, measures it brings to the environment and the financial viability of the innovation. To prove that smart bins enhance garbage collection systems, this paper analyses case studies of the three major cities: London, New York, and Singapore. The findings show that garbage collection frequency in London has furthered the rise for the current research period by 20%, while that of New York has a rise of 25%, and Singapore’s rise for the current research period is 18%. Also, there have been efficiency improvements in route optimization in the three cities by 15%, 20%, and 12%, respectively. The intelligent bins are also environmentally friendly: the CO2 emissions in London are reduced by 25%, New York by 30%, and Singapore by 22%. However, the study's findings included a 35% reduction in the number of times trash overflows happened in one city, a 40% reduction in another city, and 30% in another city. At the same time, the recycling rates also improved by 15% in one city, 18% in another city and 12% in a third city. This evidence clearly shows intelligent bins' role in enhancing environmentally sustainable waste management practices. The cost-benefit analysis done in this study, looking at the financial viability of smart bins, shows that the annual operating cost could be $50,000 in London, $60,000 in New York, and $45,000 in Singapore. The payback time for the initial cost, therefore, comes to approximately 4 years across all the cities, which marks the overwhelming benefits of the deployment of smart bin systems. Thus, the present work aims to emphasize the potential of IoT smart bins to tackle modern urban trash challenges. These smart bins can be really effective in relation to factors such as operations, environmental effects, and spending.
