A Study on the Implementation and Impact of Basic Electrical Skills Training: University-Wide General Education Course

Teaching non-majors the course of basic electrical engineering and its applications is a challenging task, particularly as the technology in this field is continuously evolving. To investigate the challenges and the long-term outcomes of the Basic Electrical Skills Training course, a university-wide general education (GE) program is designed at Wuhan University to engage students from various disciplines, with a primary focus on freshmen and sophomores. Aimed at enhancing the course's effectiveness and appeal, particularly among liberal arts majors, the author has implemented a series of practice-oriented and science-based improvements. The effectiveness of these modifications was assessed through a structured survey conducted with 121 students. The survey data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The findings from the survey demonstrate that the course revisions have successfully met instructional goals, with 67% of the students citing personal interest as the reason for enrollment, 53.7% of the students considering the course to be “very important,” and 40% reporting that they gained practical knowledge. Additionally, 87.6% of students expressed satisfaction with the teaching methods. These results indicate increased recognition and preference among students, especially those from liberal arts backgrounds.
