Plasma based Self-Reconfigurable Energy Selective Surface for High-Power Protection

This paper presents an energy-dependent self-reconfigurable frequency selective surface (SRFSS) without an additional biasing network or tuning elements. The proposed FSS can switch the operation frequency with incoming high-power microwaves. The plasma technology is integrated into the FSS design to achieve this reconfigurability. The structure is designed to resonate at $\sim \mathbf{6. 0} \mathrm{GHz}$ during the plasma OFF (low power) mode. The resonance shifts to $\sim 3.0 \mathrm{GHz}$ In the presence of a high-power input, plasma ON mode, thus resulting in an independent reconfigurable performance. A prototype is fabricated and tested as proof of the concept, with a unit cell size of $0.15 \lambda \times 0.15 \lambda \times 0.012 \lambda$, which is ultra-thin and compact.
