Nonlinear Impairments in Short-Range Linear FM Radar Frequency Translation Units

Linear FM radar systems using phase locked loop synthesizers or free running oscillators as the frequency translation entity is attractive for implementation of short range radars, such as proximity fuses. This paper presents the theoretical background of the nonlinear impairments in open loop and close loop implementations for linear FM systems. An evaluation setup was developed to assess the system implementation, providing empirical validation against simulation results. Our study contributes to a deeper understanding of the impact of nonlinearities in linear FM radar systems, offering insights valuable for their effective deployment.
