Automated IOT Security Testbed: Design and Implementation Insights

As the Internet of Things progresses, it adds and changes so many portions of our lives, but due to the lack of security in the IoT of today, it causes even more issues in which a bad hacker can use that maliciously. As this work article points out, the various techniques applied to testing IoT devices are revealed by examining in a very detailed manner previous studies made on internet of things security. The article concludes on the survey of scientific literature about cybersecurity test beds based on IoT. In this paper, we propose an open-source framework implementation for detecting comms and IoT network security vulnerabilities. The platform is easily extensible and modifiable, which allows additional security examinations and features to be included. It makes possible an automatic way of assessing security and does not need human interaction for its testing. The testbed can spot any attack made against the gadgets in question and pinpoint any security issue in the gadgets that are under inspection. Also, it is designed to monitor the links between the gadgets that are connected and the testbed, and consequently, the system can halt in case of any malicious behavior. The potential of the intended IoT security testbed to evaluate the weaknesses is demonstrated using two IoT devices, a wireless camera and a smart bulb. Growth of Internet of Things (IoT) market has offered new dimensions in multiple fields by introducing improved connectivity and digitization capabilities. Unfortunately, its growth has exposed substantial security challenges since the commonly used devices mainly contain vulnerabilities that might be used by malicious attackers. In fact, security of the devices in an IoT ecosystem is important in cascading data from unauthorized exposures, thereby reinforcing integrity of systems. The following paper describes and demonstrates how the design and implementation of an IoT security test automation framework for detecting and mitigating security flaws within IoT device systems has been conducted.
