MIMO Antenna Performance Analysis with Realistic Bumper for Automotive Application

In this paper, the design and integration of 1D and 2D MIMO antennas in Automotive RADAR applications using realistic Bumpers are discussed. A 3Tx-5Rx 1D MIMO and a 4Tx-6Rx 2D MIMO antenna configuration are designed, with each Tx/Rx antenna being a seven-element series-fed binomial array. The angular resolution provided by 1D and 2D MIMO in the azimuth is 8.74 and 4.23 degrees respectively, and, an additional elevation resolution of 46.6 degrees is provided by the 2D MIMO. Two CAD models of car bumpers are used for simulation. The antennas are mounted behind the car bumper and the impacts of this integration are investigated using the S-parameter response and Antenna Array Ambiguity Function (AAAF) model. These analyses provide important insights into the comparative performance of 1D and 2D MIMO antennas in automotive RADARs, which can help evaluate appropriate remedial measures in real-time applications.
