Electromagnetic and Particle-in-Cell (PIC) Simulation of L-Band Tunable Pulsed Magnetron

This paper presents the electromagnetic, and particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation of a 300 kW, L-Band tunable pulsed magnetron using 3D PIC code CST microwave studio. The operating frequency of the magnetron can be tuned from 818-892 MHz with the help of tuning plunger axially inserted between the annular shaped straps. The resonant structure of this magnetron is a hole and slot type of structure having eight numbers of holes and slots and double ring strapping on both sides of anode block. During the stable operation of magnetron four numbers of space charge spokes are formed which confirms $\boldsymbol{\pi}$-mode of operation in a magnetron with eight numbers of hole and slot cavities. A single peak in frequency spectrum at 868.93 MHz is observed when the tuner cup is in plane with the tuner end anode surface. The tunability of the magnetron has been verified by inserting tuner ring back and forth inside the straps.
