Investigation of Resonance De-tuning In Scalable All Metal-patch Phased Array Radar Antenna

The paper presents the investigation of the detuning of all-metal scalable Phased Array Antenna (PAA). A $4 \times 4$ tile array configuration using a suspended metal patch is studied to operate at L-Band. The metal patch is optimized to achieve 50 MHz of bandwidth at the center frequency of $1620 \mathbf{~ M H z}$. The detuning of the antenna resonance is investigated in the array environment and corrected by following a reverse engineering approach. The reverse engineering approach follows active investigation of the field distribution and optimizes the performance, thus reducing the development cost by 50%. The maximum gain of $4 \times 4 \mathbf{P A A}$ is $18 \mathbf{d B i}$, with a reduced mutual coupling of $\geq 20 \mathrm{~dB}$. The beam steering performance of the allmetal $4 \times 4 {\text { PAA }}$ is demonstrated up to ± 50°. The performance of the simulated antenna was validated by measurement and agrees well with each other. The proposed design is a potential candidate for large-scale phased array radar systems.
