Adaptive Control Strategy for VSG Parameters Based on Direct-Drive Wind Turbine System

The penetration of power electronics in wind turbine generation systems is gradually increasing and leads to frequency stability problem. However, the traditional wind turbine system lack the inertia that is inherent in traditional synchronous generator (SG), making it challenging to maintain stability under external disruptions. Therefore, virtual synchronous generator(VSG) control is introduced as a solution to this problem. However, it struggles for traditional VSG to overcome disturbances and adapt to the variability of the grid. Thus, the adaptive strategy has been proposed due to its inherent flexibility. In this paper, a new continuous adaptive control strategy is proposed based on existing adaptive control studies. It can realize the inertia and damping dual-parameter and dual-coefficient adjustment. By adapting the parameters based on changes in angular frequency, this approach maintains the optimal parameter selection in real-time throughout the dynamic process. The simulation is built in Matlab/Simulink. The effectiveness of the control strategy is tested under sudden load changes. The results demonstrate that the strategy can quickly adjust the frequency and respond quickly to the active. It ensures reliable system functioning while ensuring power transfer.
