Waves induced wind impact on Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWTs) in Black Sea

Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWT) are engineering solution for offshore wind exploitation in deep waters. Their design is not revolutionary as such installations have already been used for FPSOs (floating production storage and offloading vessel), it has to be taken into consideration that unlike FPSOs, FOWT are easily influenced by surrounding environment, such wind, waves, waves induced wind and climate, in general. Therefore, to develop cost efficient and reliable installations, mathematical models have been developed for the prediction and simulation of climate factors which have a direct impact on FOWTs performance. Being installed far from shore, in deep water, energy production is higher as winds have a higher intensity and there are few to no obstacles to reduce its power. Black Sea’s weather conditions are usually unpredictable however, modern technologies and satellites data (such as NOAA) can provide accurate results in terms of waves and wind conditions. Studies where SWAN model has been used for wave modelling forecast in the Black Sea to predict wave motion in the context of climate change provided valuable information regarding sea’s condition this century. This study aims to identify the impact of waves induces wind on FOWT in Black Sea.
