Improved Sliding Mode Control Method Using a Hyperbolic Function for Battery Charger of PMDs

This paper proposes an improved sliding mode control (SMC) method using a hyperbolic function for battery charger of personal mobility devices (PMDs). In general, various control methods can be used for the battery charger. Especially, SMC method with a robust characteristic has been actively used for the battery charger. In a conventional SMC method, a signum function is used to determine the sign of a sliding surface (S), however, it causes a large current ripple. Therefore, to reduce current ripple of the battery charger, this paper proposes an improved SMC method using a hyperbolic function. The validity of the proposed control method is verified by the simulation results.
