Design and Manufacturing of MW-Class High Performance Electrical Machines

Electrical machines play a crucial role in the electrification of transportation to achieve the zero carbon target by 2050. High power density and efficient electrical machines are required to be lightweight and efficient. However, numerous multi-domain challenges arise, which span electromagnetic, mechanical, thermal, and manufacturing considerations. A substantial gap remains in achieving this target, even with ongoing advancements in topologies bricks, particularly for high-power (MW) applications in the aviation sector. This paper provides an overview of current developments in electrical machines and examines state-of-the-art technologies across these domains to enable progress. The latest advancements supporting high power density machines are discussed, and future trends for the next generation of electrical machines are proposed.
