Basic Consideration of Topology Optimization for Eddy Current Dampers

This paper reports on the topology optimization for eddy current dampers for the purpose of maximizing their damping coefficients. The eddy current damper is a non-contact vibration suppression device that employs electromagnetic forces, thereby ensuring a long service life and the absence of any maintenance requirements. Additionally, these devices are suitable for use in cryogenic environments, as they do not require lubricating oil. Conversely, it exhibits a comparatively inferior damping performance relative to other dampers, such as those utilizing oil, rubber, or friction. In this study, a magnet array was optimized via topology optimization with the objective of maximizing the damping coefficient. The optimization resulted in an improvement of the damping coefficient to exceeding 1000 Ns/m, representing a substantial enhancement in the damping performance.
