A Web-Based MIDI Platform for Accessible Music Education: A Case Study of Pachelbel's Canon in D

This article presents a web-based platform that leverages MIDI, multimedia, AI, and WebSocket technologies to enrich music education. The platform aims to make music more interactive and accessible for students not majoring in music and more inclusive for reluctant, disadvantaged, or disabled learners. By combining synchronized MIDI with multimedia, our platform offers various interaction modalities, allowing users to engage with music through typing, pressing, playing, touching, and waving, with minimal skills required to produce musical notes, chords, or sequences. A distinctive feature of our platform is the incorporation of Pachelbel's Canon in D into our curriculum to demonstrate the system's capabilities and technology-supported pedagogy. A teaching experiment was conducted in a Taiwanese high school involving four teachers and 31 students. The results showed that 87% of the participants found the platform enjoyable and effective in enhancing their comprehension of musical concepts and boosting their motivation to learn music.
