Development of emergency control method for deloaded wind turbine generators for improving short-term frequency stability in power systems

The rise in type-4 wind turbine generators (WTs) driven by carbon neutrality policies may have an impact on power system frequency stability. This is because WTs are connected to the power system through converters. However, WTs also have the characteristic of enabling fast control due to their converters. For instance, after a generator trip, WTs can provide additional active power to the power system more quickly than synchronous generators, making them a valuable resource for fast frequency response. Taking note of these aspects, we propose an active power control method based on WECC's model. This method controls the active power output of WTs and WTs’ angular velocity to prevent stalling. Numerical simulations confirm that WTs with the proposed method improve frequency stability after a generator trip, maintaining power supply without stalling even at low curtailment ratio.
