Design and Implementation of Four Quadrant DC Drive

The paper focuses on hardware implementation of a reduced-cost, high-performance chopper-based four-quadrant DC drive system. The main aim is to control the speed and direction of a DC motor efficiently across all four quadrants of operation (i.e. forward and reverse motoring, forward and reverse regenerative braking). The drive system applies to electric vehicles (both plug-in and hybrid) that work in all four quadrants. The design encompasses the selection and sizing of components such as power transistors, diodes, and capacitors to ensure reliable and efficient operation. The system incorporates a chopper circuit to control the voltage supplied to the motor, thereby regulating its speed and direction. Modulation techniques (pulse width) are employed to vary the duty cycle ‘k’ of a chopper, allowing precise control over the motor's characteristics. Additionally, appropriate control algorithms are implemented to achieve smooth transitions between different operating modes while ensuring system stability. Experimentally validated by demonstrating the performance of the DC motor as a load in all four quadrants. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed four-quadrant DC drive utilizing a chopper for precise control and efficient operation of DC motors in industrial applications.
