Synergistic Energy Harvesting Techniques from Human Motion: Dynamo and Piezoelectric Integration for Power Generation

Tanseer Ali, Md Sadad Mahamud, Tareq Mohammad Faruqi, Sharifa Akter Rukaia, Mainul Haque, “Energy Harvesting Technology from Human Motion”, ICAICT, 2020 [1], used only dynamo for generating electricity. Based on this reference, piezoelectric sensors have been added and made this research work more efficient. The primary focus of this project is to harness the kinetic energy generated through walking or running, aiming to address the pressing need for convenient charging solutions for mobile devices and other gadgets. The study involves strategically attaching a dynamo to joints such as the knee or arm, utilizing a prototype design that enables power generation in both clockwise and anti-clockwise movements. This motion triggers the conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy through the utilization of an 11-volt, 100 rpm DC motor. In addition to the dynamo-based power generation, the study incorporates piezoelectric energy generation from pressure on the feet. This dual approach significantly enhances the overall energy harvesting capabilities of the system. As the individual engages in walking or running, the dynamo rotates, generating electrical energy through the movement. The energy produced is then channeled through a charging port, allowing for the charging of mobile phones and other portable devices. Additionally, the incorporation of piezoelectric energy generation further enhances the energy harvesting potential of the system. Piezoelectric sensors, positioned to capture pressure exerted on the feet during motion, generate electrical energy through the piezoelectric effect. The prototype developed in this study showcases the potential for generating approximately 11 volts from the dynamo rotation and the piezoelectric sensor can generate 0.5 – 1 volt.
