Enhancement of Power Quality Under Dynamic Load Conditions Using Unified Power Flow Controller

Power quality is a significant challenge in modern power systems, especially with dynamic load variations causing voltage sags, swells, and current harmonics. These disturbances, often triggered by sudden load shifts or non-linear equipment, can impact system reliability and efficiency. In our analysis, we examine the potential of the Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC), a key component in the Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS), to address these issues effectively. By managing both active and reactive power, the UPFC improves voltage stability and reduces distortion, enhancing overall grid performance. Using Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers, we achieved precise regulation, enabling the system to adjust to load changes. Our analysis, backed by MATLAB-Simulink simulations, shows that the UPFC performs better than traditional devices like SVC and TCSC, especially in reducing voltage and current disturbances. The results demonstrate that, even with dynamic loads, the UPFC reduces energy losses, enhances system reliability, and maintains grid stability. Integrating solar energy further boosts power quality and supports environmental sustainability.
