Research on a New Operating System R&D Model Based on the Open Source Community

This paper proposes a novel operating system R&D model that integrates the advantages of the bazaar model and the cathedral model, leveraging the open-source community, and collaborating with domestic and international Linux open-source communities and organizations. The model builds a trinity R&D system encompassing global universities, enterprises, and individual enthusiasts. It conducts technical activities in over 30 cities and 50 universities worldwide, training over $\mathbf{1 0, 0 0 0}$ Linux developers. Supported by national policies, the “14th Five-Year Plan for Digital Economy Development” encourages the development of open-source communities, platforms, and projects with independent core technologies, promoting the sharing of innovative resources. The “14th Five-Year Plan and 2035 Vision Outline” emphasizes integrated R&D of general processors, cloud computing systems, and core software technologies, supporting the development of digital technology open-source communities. With these policy supports, we continuously advance operating system technology and its applications through technological innovation and open cooperation, achieving significant results in key areas such as high-end chips, artificial intelligence, and cloud computing, and successfully releasing the Kylin operating system V10 version. This paper details the design, development process, achievements, and future prospects of this R&D model.
