An Autonomic Computing Based Secure Password Management System

Passwords have become an essential part of everyday life for the average Internet user. As data breaches and website compromises become more common, securing user credentials during web browsing has become more crucial than ever. While most users know that their passwords have been compromised, filtering through hundreds of accounts manually does not inspire a will to change the said passwords. The literature review examines statistics related to password breaches, emphasizing the likelihood of users reusing passwords across multiple sites and the frequency with which users change passwords following a breach. In this paper we are presenting the design of a Chrome extension that checks if a user's credentials have been compromised upon reaching a log in screen. In case the user's credentials have been found in a breach, the extension offers advice and a strong memorable password. The autonomic manager utilizes a well-known API to access a continuously updated list of compromised websites, enabling real-time comparison of captured credentials. Through this approach, users are supplied with timely information to encourage them to change and create stronger passwords on compromised websites, thereby enhancing the security of their online interactions.
