Enhancing Industrial Communication Protocol Fuzz Testing Through Virtualization And Intelligent Guidance

Industrial Control Systems (ICS) are pivotal to national critical infrastructure, making their security of utmost importance. However, traditional security testing methods struggle with the complexities of the ICS environment. This paper introduces an innovative fuzz testing approach that integrates virtualization and intelligent guidance to address these challenges [1]. The approach encompasses three key innovations: a virtualized testing environment simulating real-world ICS scenarios for comprehensive, non-disruptive testing; a state tree-guided fuzzing method that systematically explores a broader range of inputs to enhance testing efficiency; and a cross-segment feedback optimization mechanism that improves vulnerability discovery rates by optimizing testing across ICS segments. Our experimental results indicate significant improvements in test coverage and vulnerability discovery efficiency, underscoring the transformative potential of this method in the field of ICS security testing.
