Leveraging Influencer Advocacy For Smarter Decision-Making In Smart City Governance

This study examines the impact of social media influencers on public decision-making in smart city governance. As urban areas adopt advanced technologies, citizen participation in governance becomes crucial. The study explores how influencers can mobilize public support for smart city initiatives. Utilizing Digital Governance Theory and Participatory Governance Theory, the study evaluates the effects of influencer advocacy, smart city platforms, and social media engagement on public decision-making. Data from 308 participants, analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), reveal that influencer advocacy significantly boosts public participation and informed decision-making. Social media engagement emerges as a key moderator, enhancing the influence of both advocacy and governance platforms. The findings highlight the importance of credibility, authenticity, and engagement strategies for influencers in building trust and public involvement in governance. The study offers practical insights for policymakers, planners, and influencers, stressing the need for transparency and strategic communication to encourage inclusive urban development. Further research is advised to explore the evolving role of influencer advocacy in smart cities, addressing challenges like advocacy fatigue and the impact of new digital platforms.
