Optimizing Solar MPPT Boost Converter Control: Implementation of a Two-Degree-of-Freedom PID Controller with Ziegler-Nichols and MATLAB Tuning Methods

In this paper, the design and implementation of a specialized Two Degree of Freedom (2-DOF) PID controller with a targeting principle of a solar maximum power point tracking boost converter, which expertizes the increment conductance algorithm, is dealt with in detail. Unlike the conventional Perturb and Observe (P&O) methods, the Incremental conductance(INC) algorithm is more accurate and efficient. The work also addresses the issue of the 2- DOF PID controllers' design details structure along with its integration with the MPPT system in terms of transient disturbances and parameter uncertainty management functions. The innovative controller is compared with traditional Proportional-Integral (PI) and Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers under different irradiation and load performance conditions. It is shown to be robust and versatile. In this study, automatic tuning methods available in MATLAB/Simulink and the Ziegler-Nichols method as a standard controller design tuning technique are engaged to determine the controller's parameters to yield the best performance in solar PV systems, which are dynamically reactive.
