Optimum Power Dispatch Based Approach to Assess HVDC Converter Performance Under Varied Operating Conditions

Here the HVDC converter performance at optimal solutions in a hybrid AC-DC system operations is assessed. The reduced DC link control variables (CV) based model is considered for the optimal power flow (OPF), and its robustness for better converter performance under varied operating conditions is checked. A minimization of generation cost is considered as an objective function and Archimedes' optimization algorithm (AOA) is used to solve the OPF. The case studies are performed on a modified IEEE 30 bus system having, a HVDC link and the results are compared with other contemporary methods. The ability of the proposed formulation to operate the converter at lower firing angle is confirmed, and the effect of the same on ripple factor (RF), power factor (PF), valve utilization factor (VUF) is also presented. Having lowest value of firing angle by AOA, an average betterment of 6.11 % in RF is observed at the rectifier end. Results also confirm that converter performance indices differ by a small amount with the proposed strategy under increased loading conditions.
