Pixelated Metamaterial Design with Binary Genetic Algorithm

A binary genetic algorithm (GA) is used to create pixelated metamaterial structures to mimic the performance of an Electric-LC (ELC) resonator and a non-bianisotropic split ring resonator (NB-SRR). The ELC couples strongly to a uniform transverse electric field. In contrast, the NB-SRR couples strongly to a transverse uniform magnetic field. The GA is configured to match the magnitude and phase S-parameter response of each individual unit cell from 7 GHz to 10 GHz. This method of arranging metalized pixels in specific spatial locations to achieve a target electromagnetic (EM) response may prove to be useful in applications where using analytic solutions to determine a geometry that satisfies the target EM response is too difficult.
