Linear Small Signal Stability Model of Inverter Based Resource Starting Induction Motor for Stability Analysis

This paper constructs a small signal linear state space of an Inverter-Based Resource (IBR) blackstarting an induction motor (IM), given that no such state space was found in existing literature. MATLAB Simulink™ serves as the primary simulation platform. This small signal state space will only be valid for small disturbances around a desired point of linearization. The approach is to derive the state space model for an IBR feeding a resistive load as an initial step. Taking this as a base state space model, the resistor is then replaced with an induction motor, and induction motor equations with linearized slip are incorporated to the state space. The resulting state space model will then be tested against non-linear Simulink modeling tools to test validity. Although current limit capabilities are not included in the model, a discussion of how to do this is given. The resulting state space serves as a base model to perform further stability studies, such as parametric study of eigenvalue analysis. Motivation for this model comes from a need to further investigate the instabilities initially seen in [1].
