On Using Zero Trust to Securing Industrial Control Systems in the Power Systems Industry

This article explores the application of the zero trust (ZT) security model to industrial control systems (ICS) in the power systems industry. With increasing digitization of industrial processes, traditional cybersecurity measures are proving inadequate to protect critical infrastructure from evolving threats. The ZT approach, based on the principle of “never trust, always verify”, offers a robust framework for enhancing security by requiring strict authentication and authorization for all access to systems and data. In this article we provide an overview of cybersecurity concepts and highlight the unique challenges faced by ICS in the power systems sector. We then overview the key principles of ZT, discuss how these can be adapted to secure ICS environments, and showcase ZT's effectiveness in mitigating risks and protecting critical operations in the power grid. The article concludes with recommendations for operators, including comprehensive assessments, strong authentication, network segmentation, continuous monitoring, and employee training.
