Direct Modulation and Control for Matrix Converters with Harmonic Compensation

With the increasing demand for AC power, availability of compact and efficient AC-AC converters is critical. Matrix Converter, as an alternative to the traditional AC-DC-AC conversion, has garnered increasing attention due to its multiple advantages. This paper proposes an improved direct modulation method, in combination with a control scheme, that alleviate computational load through enabling hardware implementation. Moreover, to address the issue of harmonics transferred from the input to the output side and back, a novel harmonic compensation mechanism is proposed. With the proposed enhancements, the direct modulation method effectively suppresses low frequency harmonics that are typically present in the supplies. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed modulation and control scheme in providing the load with high quality power despite harmonic distortion of the supply, proving it a competitive and cost-effective alternative to the existing schemes.
