A Low Profile Wide Beam Metasurface Antenna via Complementary Sources Concept

A metasurface antenna with wide beam and low profile is designed and proposed in this paper. Characteristic mode analysis is carried out to elaborate the operating principle of the proposed wide beam metasurface antenna. The wide beam characteristic is obtained based on complementary sources theory. A qusi-TM01 mode and a qusi-TM03 mode are selected to candidate modes. The appropriate modal modifying strategy is implemented under the guidance of characteristic mode analysis. The slots are etched on the side patches to modify the modal characteristic of the two candidate modes independently. A prototype is analyzed, fabricated and measured to validate the principle. The results demonstrate that a wide beam of 220° is obtained.
