Line-of-Sight MIMO for 5G Millimeter Wave Fixed Wireless Access Applications

5G New Radio (NR) is a radio access technology supporting multi-Gbps peak data rates in the various frequency bands including millimeter-wave (mmWave) spectrum. Fixed wireless access (FWA) based on 5G NR is considered as the most promising and cost-efficient approach to complement or replace the conventional wired access. A large channel bandwidth, available at mmWave frequencies, in combination with analog beamforming and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique allow to provide data throughput comparable to optical fiber connection. This paper proposes FWA system design for mmWave frequency band realizing high rank single user MIMO transmission scheme in line-of-sight (LoS) propagation environment with low processing complexity at customer premises equipment (CPE). The proposed approach provides increased data rates meeting future traffic demands for the next generation mmWave FWA networks.
