Research on the Suppression of Overvoltage Caused by Switching of Parallel Capacitor Banks Using Resistance Capacitance Protectors

Parallel capacitors are important equipment in substations. In recent years, accidents such as explosions of parallel capacitors and burning of series reactors have occurred frequently in substations, posing a threat to the safe and stable operation of the power grid. Based on the parameters of a certain substation, this article establishes a simulation model for the switching and parallel capacitor bank of a 500kV substation to address the above issues. Based on the established simulation model, this article simulates and analyzes the overvoltage of the circuit breaker during different periods of opening, closing, and reignition, and obtain the amplitude of overvoltage under different conditions. This article selects the most severe overvoltage situation and studies the suppression effect of different parameters of resistance capacitance protectors on overvoltage. The research results indicate that installing resistance capacitance protectors can effectively reduce the amplitude of overvoltage and high-frequency oscillation frequency, rapidly attenuate the amplitude of overvoltage high-frequency oscillation, and protect electrical equipment.
