Summary

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a modern concept that has revolutionized conventional methods of measurement, monitoring, and daily life with advanced technology. The IoT is a system that links hardware, electronic devices, and other products enabled with sensor devices, software, and network connectivity, enabling to exchange data. The proliferation of embedded systems and electronics has resulted in the creation of numerous user‐friendly prototypes for the IoT. Presently, the new industrial era widely recognizes IoT technologies as a fundamental component due to their substantial capacity for innovation, automation, and modernization. The key focus of IoT technologies is to optimize processes in many domains, enhance the efficiency of systems, technologies, and processes, and ultimately enhance these metrics. The seamless integration of IoT technology into every aspect of its implementation forms the essence of automation. An IoT system includes internet‐connected smart devices that leverage embedded systems, such as sensors, processors, and communication apparatus, to exchange data acquired from the surroundings.

The primary characteristics encompass scalability, real‐time data, automation, and interoperability. Gaining knowledge about the various elements, functioning processes, characteristics, technological aspects, and nontechnical factors of the enterprise and trade is also of utmost importance. This chapter presents an extensive structure consisting of six layers aimed at the “IoT,” which addresses (i) the need for IoT; (ii) the main components used in IoT; (iii) working with IoT devices; (iv) the characteristics; (v) the technology behind IoT; and (vi) the IoT market share.
