Enhancing Mobile Edge Computing Networks with Backscatter and UAV Technology

This paper focuses on the energy efficiency and latency performance of a mobile-edge computing (MEC) network system aided by the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and collecting data from backscatter IoT devices (BID). Specifically, the system comprises multiple resource-constrained Internet of Things (IoT) devices aiming to offload their task onto a UAV equipped with a MEC server through backscatter communications (BC) over Nakagami-m fading channels. To investigate the system performance, we derive exact closed-form expressions of the successful computation probability (SCP) and the energy outage probability (EOP). We validate the analytical results using the Monte Carlo simulation method with varying key parameters such as transmit power, backscatter coefficient, UAV altitude, the fading severity factor, the MEC operating frequency, the capacity of the offload task, and the number of devices.
