Miniaturized Wideband Antenna with Coplanar Waveguide Feed for Implantable Applications

In this study ultra-miniaturized broadband antenna optimized for biomedical implant applications, operating within the 2.45 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band. The suggested broadband antenna demonstrates a highly compact design, with an ultra-small footprint of just 9.13 mm³ (6 mm × 6 mm × 0.38 mm). This minimization is achieved by leveraging high-permittivity materials for both the substrate and super-strate, combined with strategically placed rectangular slotted on the patch. The antenna delivers an impressive broadband performance, covering a frequency interval of 2.1 to 2.62 GHz with a total bandwidth of 520 MHz, making it highly capable of supporting high data rate transmissions. Using a coplanar waveguide (CPW) feeding structure, the antenna achieves a gain of -26.8 dB and exhibits an omnidirectional radiation pattern, enabling reliable data transmission and reception from all directions. These unique features make the antenna exceptionally suited for implantable medical devices, where size, performance, and reliability are critical.
