Simulation Model for Incoherent Polarized Light in Spun-Fiber-Optic Current Sensors for the Application in High-Voltage Engineering

This paper presents a simulation model for the description of incoherent polarized light propagation within the application of fiber-optic current sensing in high-voltage engineering. Based on a classification of different types of optical-current sensors in high-voltage industry, broadband optical light is especially required in interferometric based detection schemes and polarimetric detection schemes where a high-birefringent spun optical fiber (spun-optical fiber) is used as sensitive element as part of an Optical Current Transducer (OCT). With the application of spun-optical fiber, the complexity of the implementation of a simulation model rises, as the spun-optical fiber leads to coupling of the optical light travelling down the OCT. The presented and investigated model is based on physical and empirical equations which allow the consideration of incoherence, bent induced birefringence dispersion and Verdet-constant dispersion. The final model will be used to calculate polarization evolution in spun-optical fiber of a 1310 nm with 45 nm full-width at half maximum (FWHM) super-luminescence diode for purpose of validation and verification.
