Sensitivity Analysis of Dynamic Line Rating Parameters Focusing on Heat Wave Phenomena in Malaysia

This study investigates the impact of heat waves on conductor ampacity and temperature in Malaysia, which are influenced by climate change. Rising ambient temperatures result in decreased conductor capacity, potentially threatening grid reliability. The dynamic line rating (DLR) method, as per IEEE 738 standard, was employed to conduct a sensitivity analysis using MATLAB software to evaluate factors influencing DLR and conductor temperature, including ambient temperature, wind speed, and wind direction. Real-time weather data from a site study in 2023 were collected at five-minute and hourly resolutions for descriptive analysis. This data will forecast the maximum ambient temperature (Tmax) based on the Climate Change Knowledge Portal (CKPP) to assess the impact of heat waves on DLR. Findings indicate that higher ambient temperatures during heat waves significantly reduce conductor ampacity and increase conductor temperature. The sensitivity analysis shows that ampacity often falls below the static line rating (SLR), while most conductor temperatures remain below the maximum allowable conductor temperature (MACT) during heatwave events. Wind speed is identified as the most influential parameter affecting DLR. Finally, the margin of the available capacity from the SLR dropped from 30% to less than 12% during the heat wave phenomenon at Scale 2.
