Preferences, Perceptions and Aspirations on Cooling in Indian Homes

The intensifying global threat of heatwaves poses significant risks to billions, particularly in vulnerable regions where conventional forms of air conditioning exacerbates greenhouse gas emissions. This study examines sustainable cooling alternatives for Indian residential buildings, with a focus on passive cooling strategies. Employing an inductive mixed methods approach, we integrate quantitative perception surveys with comprehensive literature reviews to analyse consumer preferences, perceptions, and aspirations regarding cooling solutions. Our findings reveal a growing interest in energy-efficient alternatives, primarily driven by sustainability concerns and cost considerations. This research challenges the prevalence of traditional air conditioning in current cooling paradigms by demonstrating the potential of passive cooling strategies to: (i) Reduce energy consumption and associated costs, (ii) Enhance thermal comfort, and (iii) Mitigate environmental impact. The study provides insights into the increasing appeal of non-energy-intensive cooling methods among Indian consumers. Furthermore, it establishes a foundation for developing integrated cooling strategies that effectively balance societal needs with environmental imperatives. These findings have significant implications for policymakers, urban planners, and the construction industry in formulating sustainable solutions to combat heat stress in high-impact regions.
