Study on the Analysis of Discharge Phenomena by Fluorescent Optical Partial Discharge Sensor Under Different Electrical Stresses in Air

The optical measurement technique is widely employed in high-voltage technology for the detection of Partial Discharges (PD). In the past years, researchers have achieved success in capturing PD phenomena utilizing fluorescent PMMA optical fiber elements. PD measurements are conducted by fluorescence measurements, involving the excitation of fluorescent materials by either Ultraviolet (UV) emission or the visible light emission from the PD/arc. Despite measuring low optical powers, fluorescence measurement of PD emission has become highly sensitive by the amplification of single photons from utilization of photomultiplier tubes. In this study, a novel approach is pursued, where a multitude of fluorescent fibers are bundled for the detection of PD. The arrangement is used to investigate PD under AC, DC, and Lightning Impulse (LI) voltages, specifically focusing on the phenomenon of PD related to the PD-impulse itself. Characterizing parameters, including rise time, pulse width, and fall time, will be analyzed, compared and discussed. Furthermore, the results demonstrate clear detection of PD and a high signal-to-noise ratio.
