Power Conscious Asynchronous FIFO for Forest Event Surveillance

Asynchronous First-In-First-Out (FIFO) structures play a crucial role in real-time data processing systems, particularly in applications like forest event surveillance, where power efficiency is paramount. This paper presents designing and implementing a power-conscious clock-gated asynchronous FIFO tailored for forest event monitoring systems. The proposed FIFO architecture exploits asynchronous communication to reduce power consumption. We suggest leveraging the clock gating technique at the RTL level to dynamically disable clock signals in idle or non-operational periods of the FIFO, thereby reducing unnecessary power consumption. Additionally, optimization in synthesis level design makes the scheme achieve notable reductions in dynamic power consumption of 25% and leakage power reduction of 1.16%, with compensation of 0.46% increase in total area, while maintaining performance and functionality requirements.
