Employing Near-Field Communication Technology to Construct Memory Vaults for Dementia Patients

We solved the problems in operating electronic devices that elderly dementia patients encounter every day. Using Near Field Communication (NFC) technology that enables data exchange simply by smartphone detection, we addressed the inconvenience encountered by dementia patients for long-term care. We collected data on the needs of the patients through questionnaire surveys to understand the functionalities they prioritize while operating electronic devices. Subsequently, based on these requirements, we developed a method to improve their convenience. The designed device was then provided to the patients to collect their feedback and insights on the product usage. Finally, the structure of the product was optimized by solving the identified issues to make it more practical and user-friendly. The proposed design of “Establishing Memory, Treasures Operating NFC” provides the following functions: (1) Integration of commonly used electronic information functions for users into a tagbook for instant access and (2) After users exchange data by sensing the tag with their smartphones, they immediately access the electronic information target page in a single step. The method enhances the convenience of dementia patients in operating electronic products, improves the immediacy of dementia patients in accessing electronic information, and provides convenient tools for long-term caregivers. The product helps dementia patients live more conveniently.
