CalcPal: Mobile Application to Comprehensively Screen and Provide Remedial Activities for Dyscalculia

Dyscalculia, is a significant learning disorder affecting math skills. About 3-6% of the population is said to be affected. Therefore, there is a need for an interactive solution that addresses all variants of Dyscalculia and is tailored to Sri Lanka. This research presents a comprehensive screening and intervention approach for identifying and supporting primary school students with dyscalculia, tailored to the Sri Lankan school syllabus. Using machine learning techniques such as CNN, RNN, XGBoost, Random Forest, and SVM, this application screens for all 8 variants of Dyscalculia, accommodating both Sinhala and English languages. The subtypes addressed by this application are Verbal, Lexical, Operational, Ideognostic, Practognostic, Sequential, Graphical and Visual Spatial Dyscalculia. The developed app predicts the risk of the student having any of the types more than 90% accuracy. Overall, the gaming environment provided by this app creates an accessible environment to all students and help overcome Math anxiety.
