The Use of LED Technology in Stage Lighting. A Literature Review

Over the past two decades, international regulations on energy efficiency have led to the gradual replacement of incandescent, halogen and fluorescent lamps in favor of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In the field of stage lighting, the replacement of traditional lighting with LEDs represents a revolution that raises numerous financial, technical, esthetic and artistic issues. The educational materials for lighting designers in the arts are rooted in 20th century practices and are now outdated. In this article, we conducted a literature review to update existing work on this topic. In doing so, we found that support for this transition is nascent and mainly serves informational, cautionary or educational purposes.
